Rabbits, Dogs, now … Mouse

No new blog entry yesterday, I must confess that I did not have one scheduled earlier, but then when I was settling down to write a nice article this morning, I spilled my big mug of tea all over my keyboard, notes, invoices and my mouse. I’ve done this thing once before when I was working as an engineer, so I know how bad sticky tea can be to electronics…. BAD! I wiped out the keyboard that last time. This time I made a frantic effort to whip the battery out of the keyboard, and turn it at a good angle to drain properly. When everything was cleaned (or so I thought), I put my hand on the mouse, and lifted it gently off the mat. Tea literally flowed out of it. The prognosis was bad. Infra-red optical part was not flashing, I shook it frantically to get out all the liquid. New batteries, still no good. I opened it up and tried to clean it as much as possible inside. No response. It sat over the cooker before dinner, so it could dry out quickly. The flashing red light came back … but there was no communication between it and the computer *sob*.

I spent half an hour trying to maneuver my way around windows. It gets very tricky and frustrating when you can only tab your way around. (It might be a good way to test out how easily frustrated people can get.) So I gave up, and decided to get a new mouse when I was in town next.

The brother D was on the blower later and said there was a spare one upstairs. mmmm, a fancy new one to play with (for a while). It’s got a slightly different shape, and is built for a person with long fingers (not my short stubby little ones) …. but it is funny because it has a fan inside it … to cool the palm of your hand …. like it’s going to sweat or something with all the mouse pushing that I’ll be up to … and the fan makes a racket!

So I’ve still promised to get myself a new mouse, that is quiet, simple, optical, and watertight.

The picture shows the old and the new on my desk. Hmmmm, the new one looks kinds space aged or something. What you can’t see are the wear marks on the old mouse. I didn’t notice them until looked close. I have to ask where the paint went to? Interestingly enough, from the picture, you may notice the mouse-mat I use is actually the backing cardboard cover of a notepad. It’s much better than any mouse-mat that I’ve ever come across. It didn’t handle the tea wetting very elegantly though 😦 A good mouse mat would have been a winner there. You’ll probably also notice the mess on the desk … some day now, I’m going to have one of those manic cleanup sessions … some day now!

This is the inside of my old Dell Logitech mouse. How complex can these things get. Back in the good old days of the rollerball, there was no circuit board. Everything was simple … and they worked for ages. whatever happened to simplicity of design? Such is the evolution of hardware these days. … And, my attempt to draw a spiral (under the mouse) is pretty awful.

Bird Crap in Hand

I installed the WordPress “Blog Stats Plugin” yesterday to see what it was all about seeing as it was getting some pretty lofty reviews. one section gives the searches people use to find my blog. These are some of the results:

rough hands 1
nesting starlings 1
bird crap in hand 1

Jeez lads, ahhh come on now, own up. who was it?

Please be patient

Since I’m only only really starting my blog, my I seem to be changing my theme every other day. I’m pretty hard to please when it comes to this sort of stuff. my rules of thumb would be to:

  • Maximize content on the page
  • No gimmicks to distract readers
  • Readable font (size, style, contrast with background colour)
  • Soft colours
  • Good navigation & clear links
  • Simplicity and clarity

But of course none of the above matters if you don’t make sure that content is king

Why Rough Hands?

When I was thinking about what to call my blog a week or two ago, I went through a number of names. None of them too imaginative really. I think I have finally settled on Rough Hands. It comes from my cousin about five years ago. At the time she was in search of a man, and her mother was inquiring if she’d ever be interested in a farmer. Her reaction was no, because they’ve got such rough hands.
That seems a little shallow to me, but everyone is entitled to their view. My hands are neither soft nor rough. However, they are strong and I realize this after I’ve shaken someones hand without thinking. Moisturizers, not usually, but I wear gloves whenever I’m dealing with something that could be harsh to my hands (cold water, chemicals, oils, hard work etc), so that does help them a lot. I would wash my hands on average fifteen times a day.
But having rough hands does always sit on my mind as to how some perceive us farmers.

Wanted: Small Cheap Camera

I was just thinking that to try to describe what life is like here I think I will need a small digital camera that is willing to be roughed around, but which I can take with me where-ever I go. My current camera is a Samsung NV7 OPS which is serving me well, but there’s no way I could take it with me out on the farm. Too much rough and tumble. I need something small that will fit in my pocket and will be virtually indestructible. You only get one chance at taking a photo. I don’t have time to be running in home for the camera. I need to have something that i can just take out, shoot … and carry on with what I was doing. I’ve thought about one of those camera phones … good chance of that being a runner.

Espion Mini : Picture size is too small at 352 x 288 pixels (CIF) price is right though!!!

There’s Pen camera’s, but the resolution is still too small. hmmmm, maybe the best thing to do is to go to an electronics store and see what they have on the cheap!

I’m too tired for now and have to go check cows calving before I go to bed. eek, it’s 12:30am

Lost posts already

I was trying to set up my blog to the way I would like it. Trying to use permalinks with in the form of /%year%/%month%/%post_name%/ … and wordpress stopped showing posts. So, with whatever I was trying to do I managed to delete some of my first posts 😦

Nothing too serious. Just annoying
